dr. chris mcglory, phd.

Dr. Chris McGlory is an Early Career Researcher and expert in the fields of human nutrition, skeletal muscle protein turnover, and stable isotope tracer analysis. Dr. McGlory graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of Stirling and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at McMaster University where he examined the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on protein turnover. The aim of Dr. McGlory's research program is to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning the adaptive response of skeletal muscle to nutrition, exercise training, and immobilization.
We look 'under the hood' of human metabolism to solve a very human problem: helping patients get out of a chair, recover from surgery, and maintain their independent living.

Jonathan Mcleod is a Postdoctoral Fellow who completed his Ph.D. at McMaster University. Jonathan's primary research interest is in using stable isotope tracers to study human skeletal muscle protein metabolism. Jonathan also has a keen interest in leveraging "omics" technology to identify novel molecular candidates pertinent to skeletal muscle plasticity. Outside of the lab, Jonathan can be found playing hockey, swimming, biking, and/or running.

Tom is a postdoctoral research fellow from Midland, ON. He completed his PhD at the University of Calgary, studying the physiological responses of skeletal muscle and blood to endurance exercise. His current research examines muscle physiology during different adaptive states, like exercise and disuse. He is interested in the regulation of dynamic metabolic processes and their measurement. Outside of the lab, Tom enjoys spending time on the water, playing guitar, and reading.

Callum is a Ph.D. student from Wolfville, Nova Scotia. His research focuses on how nutritional interventions and periods of disuse impact skeletal muscle health. His work uses stable isotope tracers to bridge the gap between molecular biology and clinical application, exploring this intersection to better understand skeletal muscle physiology. When Callum is not in the lab, you will likely find him at the gym, out for a run, or hiking.

Dani is third year Ph.D. candidate from Guelph, Ontario. She is interested in human performance, and her research is focused on the intersection of nutrition and exercise training. Dani loves ice hockey and has worked as a hydration and nutrition consultant to 9 different NHL teams. When she is not in the lab or at the rink, she can be found lifting or coaching at the Gaels' High Performance Centre.

Emily is a Ph.D. student from Waterloo, Ontario. She is interested in skeletal muscle metabolism and mitochondrial physiology. Emily's research is focused on generating nutritional strategies to mitigate declines in skeletal muscle disuse. Emily is also interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms governing alterations in skeletal muscle health in response to skeletal muscle disuse.

Anna Robertson

Brendan is a first-year M.Sc. student from Ottawa, Ontario. His research applies stable isotope tracers to quantify rates of skeletal muscle protein synthesis and breakdown. He is also interested in the applications of medical imaging techniques including MRI as a complementary measure of muscle size, and in the use of machine learning to automate MRI segmentation. Outside the lab, Brendan enjoys playing hockey, golf and going to the gym.

Leor is a first-year M.Sc. student from Toronto, Ontario. She completed her B.Sc. in Kinesiology at Queen’s University, where she developed an interest in skeletal muscle physiology through her research experience within the Nutrition and Metabolism Research Group. She is currently involved in research examining the effects of disuse on skeletal muscle size and function. Outside of the lab, Leor enjoys spending time outdoors, travelling, and being with friends and family.

Noah is an MSc candidate in Exercise Physiology with the Nutrition & Metabolism Research Group. His research has focused on healthy aging and exercise, including designing and leading a 12-week combined resistance and aerobic exercise intervention in community-dwelling older adults in Kingston in partnership with the Canadian Frailty Network. He is particularly interested in knowledge translation, applied exercise science, and developing practical skills to better understand and optimize training for health and performance.

Raymond is a second-year master's student from North York, Ontario. He is interested in nutritional and resistance exercise training interventions to combat the age-related losses in physical function and skeletal muscle observed in older adults, which is the focus of his research. Outside the lab and research, Raymond enjoys powerlifting, basketball, and hiking.

Seb is a second-year master’s student from Vancouver, BC. After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Queen’s University, he joined the Nutrition and Metabolism Research Group. He is interested in researching how short-term bed rest affects changes in skeletal muscle mass, function, and carbohydrate metabolism. Outside the lab, Seb enjoys competing in powerlifting, training others in strength and conditioning, and spending time with friends.
