Analytical Capabilities
We are a stable isotope and metabolic facility. We quantify protein turnover, mitochondrial function, and amino acid availability in human and animal tissue, and in cultured cells.
Our specialty is isotope ratio mass spectrometry for tracer work determining protein-bound enrichments. Around that core we run the functional and molecular assays that provide mechanistic context for a turnover measurement. Samples can be sent to us for individual assays, or a full panel can be scoped as a package.

Core Analyses
Trace 1310 - GC Isolink II - Conflo IV - Delta Q Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer
We leverage gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (Delta Q) for 13C/12C and D/H determination in amino acids derived from protein-bound tissues of interest (e.g., skeletal muscle and plasma). We also contain wet-lab facilities for sample preparation (homogenization, hydrolysis, purification and derivatization) for stable isotope enrichment. Separate pricing offered for mass spectrometry analysis only, and both sample preparation and mass spectrometry analysis.

D/H enrichment of body water derived from saliva sampling or plasma sampling.

Mitochondrial oxygen flux in permeabilised fibres, isolated mitochondria, or intact cells, resolved by respiratory state through a substrate-uncoupler-inhibitor titration protocol.

Strength and fitness testing
Isometric and isokinetic knee extensor strength, one-repetition maximum, handgrip and VO2peak by graded exercise test.
Standard laboratory procedures
Immunoblotting for total and phosphorylated targets, ELISA, colorimetric enzyme activity assays including citrate synthase, and histology for fibre type and cross-sectional area. Available individually or bundled with the core analyses.
