McGlory Lab Secures Major Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Grant

We are thrilled to announce a major funding milestone that will support our upcoming 5-day human bed-rest trials. This research will investigate the molecular adaptation pathways of skeletal muscle disuse atrophy and evaluate targeted nutritional countermeasures to preserve mobility in aging populations. The project represents a significant collaborative effort across clinical and proteomic research divisions. Over the course of the 5-day immobilization period, participants will undergo rigorous physiological monitoring, including daily muscle biopsies, bilateral ultrasound imaging, and continuous metabolic assessment. By utilizing state-of-the-art deuterium stable isotope tracers, our team will be able to track muscle protein fractional synthetic rates at an extremely high resolution, pinpointing exactly how cellular pathways adapt to sudden disuse. Ultimately, this study aims to validate a novel cocktail of nutritional countermeasures designed to mitigate muscle wasting. The insights gained from this trial could revolutionize clinical care protocols for bedridden patients, post-surgical recovery, and long-duration spaceflight. New Proteomics Pipeline Calibrated

Our team has successfully calibrated our new high-resolution mass spectrometer, enabling real-time mapping of muscle protein synthesis using deuterium stable isotope tracers. This advancement enables single-day kinetics analysis with unprecedented atomic precision. By optimizing our sample preparation techniques and refining our chromatographic separation methods, we have achieved a ten-fold increase in signal-to-noise ratio compared to previous instruments. This lets our researchers analyze extremely small muscle tissue biopsies, minimizing patient discomfort while maximizing data yield. In the coming weeks, this new proteomics pipeline will be fully integrated into our active clinical trials. We look forward to publishing our initial validation data and making our high-throughput analytical protocols open-source for the global muscle research community.
